34.- How did they make a Gothic altarpiece?

Objectives:

  To discover the development and function of the altarpieces throughout the history.

  To know how they were made.

  To facilitate the student to learn painting techniques on wood in the Middle Age.

Descripció:

We start by studying the history of an altarpiece, since its birth to present time, when it fades out. Then , we talk about the main parts of an altarpiece and about the people who ordered them and we will, focus on the manufacturing process of an altarpiece – materials techniques, etc.- and artist and craftsmen in charge of them, such as the carpenter, and the painter. To end up, students will be asked to make their own altarpiece: fitting wood pieces, glue them, attach them, cover them in clothes, plaster them, stencil the drawing, to gild them, and paint them at the end.

Material: Didactic guide for teachers, students’ workbook, types of wood, “cola de conill” , gold layers, clay on colours, brushes, hooks, a collection of slides.
Time:

Half a day.

Means of transport:

By Bus.


Observations:

This activity should be implemented by a visit to the Diocesan Museum of the Cathedral to see altarpieces and work on the ones which are exhibited. The group cannot exceed 25 students.
