37.- Let´s come, would you like to know “la plaça”?

Objectives:

  To know the city, the squares.

  To strengthen the procedures to observe urban reality to introduce the students into urban geography.

  To know and analyse the environment.


Curricular area:

Knowledge of social and cultural environment.


Place:

Plaça de la Font in Tarragona.


Level:

8-9 years old pupils.


Time:

School year.

Work « in situ ».

Description:

Reading and interpretation of urban landscape of the square.

  • Active description of its shape and measure.
  • Knowledge of urban furniture, quantitative analyse.
  • Shops in the square, divided into branches or sectors.
  • To understand all the functions of a square, depending on the people living there.
  • To understand and appreciate people’s behaviour on the square.
  • To discover simple polygonal shapes on the façades.
  • To discover public services (water, gas, etc.) in the square.
  • To build a scale model of the square to portray their observations.

Material:

Worksheets, measure tapes.

Time:

Half a day.

Means of transport:

On foot.


Observations:

This activity could be adapted to any square of a city. It has been designed to be autonomous.
